Infanterie ** Givati Brigade ( גבעתי ) Battalions of the Givati Brigade: http://www.givati.org.il/english.htm - Shaked - Tzabar - Rotem - Palchan (engineering and explosives) - Palsar (elite reconnaissance) - Orev (anti tank warfare) The T'zanhanim brigade specialized in airborne operations, using helicopters and parachuting. The Golani brigade deployed the Achzarit APC, while the Givaty brigade specialized in maritime operations, similar to the US Marines. Today, all units train with helicopters, the Givati brigade no longer trains on amphibious operations and the brigades are much closer to each other in organization and equipment. While in the past there was some differentiation between the brigades, in quality, training and deployment, by 2004 they were essentially similar. The four brigades have the same organization, with each brigade made of three conventional infantry battalions; a Signal Company ("Plugat Heil Kesher - PALHICK", in Hebrew), and a Reconnaissance Unit / Reconnaissance Battalion (“Yechidat Siour / Gdud Siour – YACHSAR / GADSAR”, in Hebrew). http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/israel/army.htm ** 1st Mechanized Brigade Golani Brigade ( גולני ) Battalions of the Golani Brigade: - Barak Battalion - Gdud 12 - Gideon Battalion - Gdud 13 - "Golani Buds" - The Egoz Reconnaissance Unit (a company) - The First Breachers' Battalion (HaBokaim HaRishon) - Gdud 51 CO Lt Col Yaniv Asor; Deputy commander: Maj. The Designated Infantry Battalions (known as the 90s Battalions) were founded in the 1990s as an accompanying force to mobile infantry. On December 6, 2005, the brigade was formally established with the 90s Battalions unified into a single, regular service brigade commanded by Colonel Eyal Nosovski. Although the brigade is subordinated to the 162nd Division, each battalion is operatively attached to regional brigades in the West Bank Division. The name Nahal was given to the regiment because the first battalion attached to it, the 50th, was the Airborne Nahal battalion, transferred over from the Paratroopers regiment (which was compensated with the raising of a new battalion). Two former patrol units, the 931st and the 932nd were also converted into infantry battalions and attached to the new regiment. Today, the 931st and 932nd are both high-quality, regular infantry battalions whose soldiers are drafted from the general population and serve a full three-year combat service. The 50th battalion, on the other hand, currently has a unique makeup. Half of the battalion's companies are made up of gar'inim, who serve two years military service and then one year civilian volunteer service, and the other half, including the battalion's veteran combat companies, are made of Bnei Mashakim LePikud, nick named Mishkonim. The Mishkonim are youths from kibbutzes and moshavs, who, prior to their military service were invited to and completed/passed a three-day gibush (selection phase involving various physical, mental, and sociometric challenges), and after their initial training are sent, most often within the first year, to Command Sergeants School. They also, as a continuation of 50th Battalion tradition, complete a paratrooper course after their advanced infantry training. The 50th is considered to be the IDF regular infantry battalion with the highest quality manpower, even more than the Paratroopers Regiment, as a result of the selection phase that the soldiers must pass prior to admittance and the fact that nearly 70% of its soldiers are qualified command sergeants, though only a few are picked to actually serve in this regard. The Mishkonim all serve a full three-year service and many continue on to Officer Candidates School. A fourth Nahal battalion was created in the early 1990s to serve as a special forces detachment for the regiment. Soldiers wishing to serve in this elite battalion must pass a three-day gibush, after which they are dispersed into specialized training programs for each of the three companies that make up the battalion: the Palsar (Plugat Siur, Reconnaissance Company), which is generally considered to be the most elite company (enjoying the highest budget, longest training cycle, and receiving first pick of the soldiers from the gibush- though, in truth, the difference in quality between it's soldiers and those of the other two companies is negligible), the Palnat (Pluga Neged Tankim, Anti-Tank Company), and the Palhan (Plugat Handasa VeHabala, Engineering and Explosives Company). The task of the battalion is to serve as a pathfinder force for the regiment, and to conduct special operations in accordance with each company's unique abilities. In the current low intensity conflict, the companies usually act as counter-terrorist forces, raiding terrorist homes and hideouts. - Shaham Battalion (931 "granite") CO Lt. Col. The unit is open only for religious Jews and the IDF makes sure they will be able to keep all the Jewish commandments and laws (mitzvot). - Gariney Nahal (גרעיני נח"ל) - in the history, they combined their military service with the establishment of new agricultural settlements (called Nahal settlments) and the development of older settlements and towns (settlers). Today some of them still do that, but a large part of them are doing community service in poor neighbourhoods and help the needy instead of erecting new settlements. Many of Israel's kibbutzim and villages were founded by Nahal settlers, who also protected them. - The Nahal band - a famous military band known for its canonical Eretz Israel songs which have become classics. The band gave birth to many Israeli entertainment talents such as Tuvya Tzafir, Neomy Polani, Gidi Gov and more. ** Aliya Brigade (first organized in February 2002) CO Roman Rathner Immigrants who arrive in Israel after age 28 are not called up to serve in the IDF. This policy has prevented hundreds of men in their 30s and 40s from the former Soviet Union, with military experience fighting Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan and Chechnya, from applying their expertise in the service of their new country. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, over half of the Russian-Jewish population immigrated, primarily to Israel. Since the Jackson-Vanik amendment was signed into law in 1975, over one million Russian-Jews have immigrated to Israel. Some of those were Russian soldiers who fought in Chechnya and Afghanistan and today form the Aliya Brigade (aka Immigrant Legion) in the Israeli Army, a specialize sniper unit of 350 to 800 soldiers with previous experience in the West Bank and Gaza. Just three weeks ago there were reports that members of the reserve unit (Civil Guard) were volunteering to fight against Hezbollah and now they have reportedly been deployed. "We already proved our worthiness in Gaza where we showed our ability to destroy Palestinian snipers," said Roman Ratner, the founder and commander of Alia. They were recently deployed to take part in the offensive launched by Israel in Lebanon four weeks ago and have been operating since Tuesday in the Bint Jbeil area. ”More than 20 Hezbollah fighters have been killed in the Bint Jbeil area over the past 24 hours,” an army spokesman told AFP without explaining how the members of the Lebanese militia were killed. The primary sniper rifles used by the IDF are the 7.62mm Galil sniping rifle and the TCI M89-SR, which are similar to the Russian-made Dragunov 7.62mm SVD and would require little adjustment to transfer proficiency in one weapon to the other. http://macgirvin.com/news/15 http://www.sourceisrael.com/read.php?id=53 2.
