Ukraine confirms development of next-generation main battle tank, Dec 20, 2018

Ukraine will develop its own next-generation main battle tank, the country’s state-owned defense industrial group Ukroboronprom has confirmed.

Ukrainian Remote-Controlled ZU-23 Autocannon

On September 21, Oleksandr Turchynov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, took part in an event where the latest developments of the Ukrainian defense industry were demonstrated. Among a variety of new and upgraded weapon systems and vehicles (helicopters, armored vehicles, UAVs etc.), they also revealed a remote-controlled conversion of the ZU-23 autocannon.

190416103927788250.jpg

ZU-23 is a twin-barrelled 23mm autocannon initially developed for anti-aircraft use. More than half a century after its development, this autocannon is still in service in the armed forces of post-Soviet and many other countries. Although it is not too useful against modern military jets, it can be very successfully used against UAVs. Also, this autocannon is widely used in the Ukrainian and Middle Eastern conflicts as an anti-materiel and anti-personnel weapon system. With an extremely high rate of fire (2,000 rpm) and quite a potent cartridge, it is a devastating tool for the mentioned applications.

By designing the remote control conversion of the ZU-23 autocannon, Ukrainian arms designers probably try to further adapt this weapon system to the requirements of the modern warfare. According to the Ukrainian officials who demonstrate this weapon in the video embedded below, a single operator can control up to six remote-controlled ZU-23 autocannons. Apparently, the manual operation is still retained and upgraded, too.

Another tendency observed in the current wars is the almost exclusive use of the ZU-23 autocannon in a mounted configuration. If you watch combat footage from the Ukrainian or Syrian conflicts, you’ll see that these autocannons are mostly mounted on pickup trucks, BMP and MTLB chassis etc. Mobile ZU-23 autocannons are even more effective anti-materiel and anti-personnel weapons. So the mobility became pretty much a must-have feature for this weapon in the modern combat. That being said, I think this new remote-controlled version of the ZU-23 autocannon could possibly be even more effective if mounted onto an unmanned ground vehicle.

[IDEX 2019] Hamond Suppressors from Ukraine

190418103043340756.jpg

Hamond is a small Ukrainian company designing and manufacturing suppressors from cal .22 to 30 mm. Engineer Evgeniy Moskalenko, the CEO and chief designer of Hamond, brought to IDEX a selection of cutaway models showing an array of different internal geometries.

The suppressors at IDEX, in the Calidus exhibition area, showcased the evolution of Hamond design through the years. In the below photo, from right to left, oldest to newest designs, most innovative featuring solutions covered by (Ukrainian) patents.

The biggest sample is .50 cal, designed for Barrett rifles. As with most Hamond designs, it offers a noise reduction of 32 dB. One of the peculiar features of the suppressor is the internal clearance between baffles bore and bullet. Apparently, the Ukrainian Barrett operators were experiencing issues in the field with “explosive” (sic, maybe API) bullets damaging their suppressors under extensive use and with machine gun rated ammunition. Therefore, Hamond strove to provide the best compromise between clearance and efficiency. Bore diameter is now 16.5 mm (0.65″) versus a standard 15 mm (0.60″).

The samples above are manufactured with an external titanium body while first baffles are stainless steel, titanium in the middle portion and last baffles are made of aluminum. Threaded titanium adapters allow interchangeability between weapons.

Another product which, according to Hamond, is battle tested and currently actively employed by Ukrainian Special Forces, the suppressor cover, is rated for up to 250 °C (482 °F). While also offering protection against burns and limiting the mirage, the covers, available in Multicam pattern, are designed to further protect the shooter from detection. According to the designer, up to five consecutive shots can be taken before the suppressor can be detected by thermal imaging devices.

Currently, Hamond cannot export to the US, nor they find it a viable solution to set up an American manufacturing facility. Their core capabilities lie in designing and testing, as their online presence clearly shows: Hamond and Hamond Modeling on Youtube; Eng. Moskalenko on Silencer Talk forums. They are therefore interested in offering technical consultancy or licensing of their proprietary designs.

[IDEX 2019] InterProInvest Malyuk from Ukraine

190418103502120935.jpg

Malyuk is the new bullpup assault rifle which has apparently been adopted by the Ukrainian Army.

Over the years, TFB has been following the development of the rifle which evolved from a relatively crude bullpup AK to a more polished version with fairly unique features. The samples brought to IDEX represent the latest stages of its evolution.

Malyuk: Main Features and Handling

The rifle, available in 5.56×45 mm, 5.45×39 mm and 7.62×39 mm, sports a 415 mm (about 16.3″) barrel and weighs up to 3.8 kg (8.4 lbs). The overall external shape is typical to several bullpups of the same category with a big D-guard protecting the grip. Picatinny rails are available on the full length of the upper surface of the polymer frame and on the short portion of the handguard in front of the grip.

The operation is presumably based on the AK. A lever above the barrel, in front of the handguard, may imply gas regulation options. The bolt does not hold open.

Unlike the Croatian VHS, which offers several solutions towards ambidextrous operation, the Malyuk has a more basic approach with ejection to the right side only. The reciprocating charging handle is on the left side, however, provisions for moving it to the right seem to be available. The safety and fire mode selectors have been separated, with a cross bolt safety (maybe reversible?) easily accessible above the trigger and an ambidextrous selector lever in the stock. This allows for a prompt operation of the most important controls while keeping the internals relatively simple.

The magazine release is a wide, trigger-like button located behind the actual trigger. Access is comfortable from either side and activation is smooth. The AK-style magazine, quite surprisingly, drops freely upon release. The ergonomics of the magwell relative to the grip allow for effortless reloading while keeping the rifle on target.

The grip is hollow and the video playing at the booth seemed to imply a natural cooling airflow being channeled through it.
