Brazilian Army to receive last locally built anti-tank weapons

Victor Barreira

  Lisbon

The Brazilian Army by March is to receive the last three MSS 1.2 AC anti-tank missile systems from indigenous company Mectron-Engenharia, Indústria e Comércio.

Deliveries for this tranche of the man-portable laser-guided weapons began in October 2012 and include tripod-mounted lightweight launchers, rounds, training, simulators, ground support equipment, logistics, and technical documentation.

Talks between the army and the contractor for procurement of additional units are expected to be held this year. While the exact quantity of weapons already purchased was not made available, it is known that the army bought an average of 12 rounds per firing unit.

The Brazilian Navy Marine Corps has also been receiving the system since November 2012 as part of a contract awarded in 2009. Those deliveries are expected to be complete by next June or July.

The 130 mm calibre, 1.5 metre-long missile and its associated launching tube weigh 23 kg, and the firing system weighs 28 kg. It has a 3200 m maximum range and can penetrate 570 mm steel armour.

Mectron-Engenharia, Indústria e Comércio is currently developing an improved version that is expected to include ammunition with a range out to 4000 m. It is also to have the capability to accept tandem and anti-bunker warheads, a lighter firing unit, and a thermal imager in the firing unit's optics.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require two (2) U.S. Government or contractor representatives to travel to Brazil for a period of up to one (1) year to provide assistance during the upgrade of these 40 vehicles. There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

Four firms answer Brazilian gun system RfP

Victor Barreira, Lisbon - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

10 March 2015

The Brazilian Army has received four proposals for a local procurement of a 105 mm gun system intended for its 8x8 armoured reconnaissance vehicle within the VBR-MR (Viatura Blindada de Reconhecimento-Média de Rodas) programme.

CMI Defence, OTO Melara, Denel Land Systems, and China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) responded on 9 March to the request for proposals (RfP) issued in November 2014 with the aim of buying one prototype and an option for a pilot batch of about 13 systems.

The acquisition by the army's Manufacturing Directorate will most likely open the door for at least 100 turrets.

Requirements include the 105 mm high-pressure gun as main armament, 7.62x51 mm machine guns, 76 mm grenade launchers, electro-optical and fire-control systems, as well as provisions for communication and command-and-control systems.

The Brazilian Army is scheduled on 20 March to officially induct 30x173 mm ammunition developed by local company Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC), intended for the ATK Mk44 Bushmaster automatic cannon that arm the AEL Sistemas UT30BR remote weapon station.

A batch of 30,000 rounds comprised of target practice - tracer (TP-T) and high-explosive incendiary (HEI) ammunition was ordered in December 2012 from CBC and is now entering service, the army told IHS Jane's on 18 March.

Several remote weapon stations were acquired for the army's Iveco Latin America VBTP-MR Guarani 6x6 amphibious armoured vehicle and these stations' cannon will fire the new ammunition. The UT30BR also fits a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun, grenade launchers, fire control system, laser warning system, and ballistic armor.

CBC is among the largest ammunition producers in the world. The company also owns Magtech, Sellier & Bellot, and MEN brands.
