IDEX 2013: UAE gets new rocket system

Christopher F Foss

  Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates Armed Forces (UAEAF) have received an undisclosed number of Jobaria Defense Systems (JDS) Multiple Cradle Launchers (MCLs) - the most powerful 122 mm artillery system in service with any army.

Two of these systems were shown for the first time at the IDEX exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from 17-21 February, with one appearing in the mobility display.

The MCL is one of a growing number of weapon systems being developed in the UAE with the assistance of overseas contractors, but with final assembly and integration taking place in the UAE.

It includes an Oshkosh Defense 6x6 Heavy Equipment Transporter (HET) towing a 10-wheel semi trailer with four power-operated 122 mm rocket launchers, each with three pods containing 20 launcher tubes.

The HET is fitted with a protected cab, air-conditioning system, and a central tyre-inflation system.

When the tyre-inflation system is deployed, 10 stabilisers are extended by remote control on the semi-trailer. The latter has an auxiliary power unit, which allows the complete system to be run with the HET engine switched off.

A computerised fire-control system is fitted for increased accuracy and the operator can select one pod of 122 mm rockets or a number of pods.

Accuracy is further enhanced by the installation of a global positioning/inertial navigation system on the launchers.

The system displayed at IDEX can fire Roketsan's TR-122 series of rockets, which have been in service with the UAEAF for several years in conjunction with a 6x6 platform.

The standard TR-122 rocket is fitted with a high-explosive (HE) warhead activated by a point detonating fuze, while the warhead of the TRB-122 contains HE and 5,500 steel balls and is activated by a proximity fuze.

Maximum range is being quoted as 40 km with a minimum range of 16 km, with these figures depending on the altitude of the launcher.

Once the rockets have been launched, the system would redeploy to another position where new pods of 122 mm rockets would be rapidly loaded using the onboard crane of the dedicated support vehicle, which uses a similar tractor truck and trailer system.

Although the system shown at IDEX fires 122 mm unguided surface-to-surface rockets it is probable that the system can also launch the longer-range Rocketsan T-300 300 mm rockets from four-tube pods.

Roketsan is developing a precision guidance system for the T-300 system, which is already in service with the Turkish Land Forces Command.

IDEX 2013: UAE orders Predator XP

Jeremy Binnie

  Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be the first customer for the General Dynamics Predator XP unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), it was announced during the IDEX exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from 17-22 February.

An undisclosed number of the UAVs were ordered through the International Golden Group - General Atomics' Abu Dhabi-based partner - in an AED722 million (USD197 million) deal that includes a full support package.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems developed the unarmed Predator XP so that it is not subject to the same export restrictions as other members of the successful Predator series, which can only be sold to NATO members and selected US allies.

General Atomics says the Predator XP has the same physical dimensions, operational ceiling, speed, and endurance (up to 40 hours) as the original RQ-1 Predator and can be equipped with a range of exportable sensors, including electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) cameras and the company's Lynx Multi-mode Radar.

IDEX 2013: Paramount announces another acquisition

Jeremy Binnie

  Abu Dhabi

The Paramount Group announced during the IDEX exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from 17-21 February, that it had acquired Industrial & Automotive Design South Africa (IADSA) to give it a "specialist in-house military vehicle design" capability.

Paramount, Africa's largest defence company, has been growing rapidly since it was established in 1994. While it has acquired a number of companies since then, CEO John Craig told IHS Jane's that Paramount's organic growth was about 30%.

Its speciality is offering affordable defence solutions to developing world countries. A key part of its success in this market has been its ability to help its customers finance Paramount's services. "Our ability to take that risk is rooted in really good relations," said Craig.

While best known for its range of armoured vehicles, Craig said the company's business is currently split roughly equally between aerospace and land systems and that it is also looking to grow its naval arm.

The core of this aerospace business in recent years has been the sale of ex-South African Air Force (SAAF) Mirage F1 fighters to Gabon and Congo Brazaville, as well as packages covering all the support and pilot training those countries need to operate them.

Craig said that the availability of ex-SAAF aircraft means that it would be possible to provide similar packages to "one or two more customers".

Paramount's longer-term ambitions in the aerospace market rest on the Advanced High-performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft (AHRLAC): a single-pusher turboprop aircraft that the company is developing in conjunction with Aerosud.

Craig said that, unlike other turboprop aircraft that have been developed into affordable surveillance/light-attack platforms, the AHRLAC was specifically designed for the role.

IDEX 2013: I-Master radar completes Camcopter flight trials

Jeremy Binnie

  Abu Dhabi

Thales's I-Master radar system has successfully completed flight trials onboard a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), it was announced at the IDEX exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from 17-22 February.

The trials took place on 7 February at the Schiebel test facility in Austria, with each flight lasting several hours.

The I-Master provides a Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) capability for all-weather surveillance, detection, and target recognition. It weighs 30 kg and has the same footprint as a standard 15-inch electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor turret.

The Camcopter S-100 is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) rotary-wing UAV capable of carrying a range of sensors for military and civilian applications.

"This trial, conducted in partnership with Schiebel, provided excellent GMTI and SAR results," Eddie Awang, vice-president of Intelligence Surveillance & Reconnaissance at Thales UK, said. "Whether installed alone or to complement electro-optical/infrared sensors, I-Master greatly improves the effectiveness of any surveillance scenario."

IDEX 2013: US Army orders Excalibur 1b

Jeremy Binnie

  Abu Dhabi

The US Army has placed its first order for the latest variant of Raytheon's Excalibur precision-guided 155 mm artillery shell, it was announced at the IDEX exhibition, held in Abu Dhabi from 17-22 February.

The order is worth USD55 million and deliveries will be made in the last quarter of 2013.

Kevin Matthies, Raytheon's Excalibur programme director, told IHS Jane's that the company has "completely redesigned" the Excalibur 1a-2 - about 650 of which have been fired by US forces in Afghanistan - to produce the Excalibur 1b.

This has resulted in a 25% reduction in the cost of the shell and improved reliability from 85% to 93%, but no decrease in the system's 50 km range when fired from a 155 mm/52-calibre gun, he said.

Matthies added that new algorithms had also resulted in a marginal improvement in the shell's accuracy, which he gave as a radial miss distance of under 4 m (meaning 100% of projectiles fall within that distance of the target). This level of accuracy has ensured that the Excalibur has become a popular weapon in Afghanistan, where rules of engagement enable coalition forces to use it as an alternative to air-launched precision-guided munitions, Matthies said.

With the Excalibur 1a2 already in service with several countries, Matthies said there was "a lot of interest in the 1b" from potential foreign customers.
