Air Force improves nuclear force manpower levels

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- The Air Force will increase nuclear force manning at Air Force Global Strike Command missile and bomber wings beginning this fall, officials announced Aug. 7.

The Air Force will plus-up nuclear enterprise manning levels by hundreds of positions at select bases, with the first wave of Airmen expected to arrive through the next few assignment cycles.

As outlined by Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James, the manning plus-up is part of a broader series of measures and incentives designed to improve the culture and mission effectiveness of the service’s nuclear force.

F-15C crashes over Shenandoah Valley

BARNES AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mass. (AFNS) --

At approximately 9:05 a.m. today the 104th Fighter Wing lost radio contact with an F-15C aircraft during a cross country mission over the Shenandoah Valley Virginia. 

 

The pilot flying the F-15C made a report of an inflight emergency prior to radio contact being lost.  Subsequently there were reports of dark smoke being seen around the aircrafts last known whereabouts.   Local law enforcement arrived on scene and confirmed the aircraft crashed.

F-15C Eagle pilot found dead in remote Virginia mountains

BARNES AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mass. (AFNS) -- Officials confirmed today the pilot was fatally injured in the Aug. 27 crash of an F-15C Eagle in the remote mountains near Deerfield Valley, Va.

The pilot's name is being withheld pending notification of family members and will be released when appropriate.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we are doing all we can to support them during this very difficult time," said Col. James Keefe, Commander, 104th Fighter Wing. "We ask that everyone respect the privacy of the family and allow them the time they need to grieve," added Keefe.

Boeing avait annoncé il y a quelques mois que des "anomalies" dans le câblage de l'avion avaient été découvertes et qu’il serait nécessaire de les corriger. Ces problèmes relèvent de l’efficacité de la triple redondance qui doit respecter les spécifications militaires et de la Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Il s’agit de déplacer des câbles qui sont actuellement placés trop près les uns des autres. Les normes de sécurités exigent que ceux-ci puissent être installés à une distance physique suffisante. De fait, se sont 1’700 faisceaux de câbles qui doivent être retirés et réinstallés. Les trois premiers KC-46A d’essais sont concernés par ces modifications.
