HMS Echo home after year at sea

18 May 07

The Royal Navy Hydrographic & Oceanographic Survey Vessel, HMS Echo, has returned to her base at Devonport after a year-long deployment that took in most of the globe.

Image IPB

HMS Echo returning to her home port of Devonport after a year at sea

Echo's latest deployment saw her conducting valuable survey work as well as high profile diplomatic visits around the Arabian Gulf, the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea, and for the first time, working with the Vietnamese hydrographic offices in Ho Chi Min City. The environmental data she has gathered over the last 12 months will now enable current navigation aids to be updated and improved.

The ship's last port of call before reaching home was in the Mediterranean, where she represented the Royal Navy and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) at this year's International Hydrographic Organisation Conference in Monte Carlo.

The annual conference is a high profile gathering of heads of national hydrographic and oceanographic organisations from around the world. The UKHO, the producer of the famous Admiralty Chart, has a world-class reputation and it was fitting that HMS Echo was able to provide visible support for this special event.

By the time HMS Echo returned to Plymouth she had been deployed for 371 days, 341 of which were operational. Her work in the Northern Arabian Gulf underlined the United Kingdom's commitment to improve the safe navigation for both merchant and coalition military vessels operating in an area which has not been surveyed to modern standards for many years.

Upon leaving the Gulf the ship participated in a joint exercise in the South China Sea before berthing in Singapore for a maintenance period. From Singapore, she undertook survey work in the Far East and paid high-profile diplomatic visits to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Manila in the Philippines, Vladivostok on the Russian Pacific coast and Yokosuka to the south of Tokyo in Japan.

Her return journey included a brief maintenance period in Malta, on completion of which she participated in a collaborative survey with the national hydrographer of Malta to identify the wreckage of 'Hope', one of the three Gloster Gladiators used by the RAF to defend Malta from the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Her final visit was to the Principality of Monaco in support of the UKHO.

HMS Echo's Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander Bruce Badrock said:

"This has been a very successful deployment for HMS Echo that has seen the ship working very hard during a long deployment. The ship's company were particulary proud to be representing both the Royal Navy and the UK Hydrgraphic Office at the high profile hydrographic conference in Monte Carlo. We are now looking forward to a well-earned break back home in Plymouth."

HMS Echo is a multi-role Hydrographic & Oceanographic Survey Vessel built by Appledore Shipyards in 2002 and supported by Vosper Thornycroft. The ship's company is made up of 13 Officers, 21 Senior Rates and 28 Junior Rates and operates a three-watch rotation system with only 48 of the 72 personnel onboard at sea enabling. This system enables the ship to spend extended periods at sea.

In late April 2007 the Chief Executive of Thales, Denis Ranque, confirmed that with the backing of the French government the company had submitted a proposal to the UK MOD for merging the separate PA2 and CVF projects into a single three-ship programme. He said that "Building the ships together would be in the best interests of British and French taxpayers." He suggested that a French yard could build one-third of the hull for each ship; British yards could build the other two-thirds: "If we can find a way that industry is incentives, if part of the savings are going to industry itself, I do not see why our friends at BAE Systems would not take that on." Apparently this approach will realise saving of about £80 million (€120 million) per ship.

Vive HMS Audacious!

Image IPB

The MoD has placed a £200 million contract with British industry for the construction of a new nuclear powered attack submarine, to be named HMS Audacious.

The 7,800 tonne boat, which will be equipped with the latest cruise missiles, is the fourth of the Astute class, the largest and most powerful attack submarines ever built in Britain for the Royal Navy. Assembly of the submarine is expected to start later this year.

Lord Drayson, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support said:

“Audacious will join the three other submarines of the Astute class already under construction at the BAE Systems shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our commitment to the attack submarine programme, as set out in the Defence Industrial Strategy. It also demonstrates our commitment to the Royal Navy, which needs these submarines to fulfil its duties around the globe. It demonstrates the best of British technology and our determination to develop and transform the UK Submarine industry over the coming years.”

The First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Jonathon Band said:

“We need a versatile maritime force across the operational spectrum. Astute forms a key part of this future programme and is designed as a multi role platform. The first of these immensely powerful submarines, HMS Astute, is launched next month and I look forward to her entry into service with her sisters, Ambush and Artful – and now the fourth of the class, Audacious. These boats will help protect Britain’s interests overseas for decades to come.”

BAE Systems wins 200 mln stg submarine contract from UK MoD UPDATE

(adds detail from statement)

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The British government said it has awarded a 200 mln stg contract to a subsidiary of defence group BAE Systems PLC to carry out initial build work on a fourth Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarine for the Royal Navy.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said BAE Systems Submarine Solutions would begin assembling the 7,800-tonne boat, which will be fitted with cruise missiles and will be called HMS Audacious, later this year.

Minister for defence equipment and support, Lord Drayson, said: 'Audacious will join the three other submarines of the Astute class already under construction at the BAE Systems shipyard at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.'

The contract announced today will run until the end of March next year. The final contract placed will cover all aspects of the construction and completion of the submarine. It is currently under negotiation and due for finalisation late next year. philip.waller@thomson.com

In February and March 2007 reports appeared in the French press stating that France was again urgently seeking a much closer industrial linkage between its PA2 project in order to achieve substantial cost saving for the two countries - this apparently including the manufacture at the Aker shipyard, St. Nazaire, of CVF superblocks or even their whole hulls. Based on previous hints from Thales, this website estimates that the potentials saving to the UK MOD of building the two CVF hulls in France could exceed £500 million. The French apparently propose that BAE Systems Surface Ship Solutions (formerly known as BAE Naval Ships) and VT Shipbuilding were compensated for the loss of work by being given a share of the total savings.

R.Beedall

Royaume-Uni:

- design base

- design detaile pour le STOVL variant

- MT30s pour les trois CVFs

- produire Blocks 1,4 et 5 pour les trois CVFs

- final assembly des deux CVFs britannique

France:

- design detaile pour le CTOL variant

- produire Blocks 2 et 3 pour les trois CVFs

- final assembly de PA2

UK's DESO examines potential for warship-building in Southeast Asia
