Freccia rolls into IDEX

CIO (Iveco Fiat-Oto Melara Consortium) has brought its latest Freccia (8x8) to IDEX 2015, in the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) configuration, to offer it for the first time to meet potential requirements in the region. Freccia is in full-scale production for the Italian Army under two contracts, one for 249 vehicles and a second for 381. More than 220 units have already been delivered.

The Freccia IFV is fitted with a two-person turret armed with an Oerlikon 25mm dual-feed cannon, 7.62mm co-axial machine gun and a similar roof-mounted weapon. Other armament options include an ATK 30mm Mk44 cannon and an anti-tank guided weapon mounted either side of the turret.

In addition to its crew of three, the vehicle also carries eight dismounts in the IFV configuration. More specialised Freccia versions include reconnaissance, command post vehicle and 120mm self-propelled mortar.

An armoured personnel carrier version is also being marketed, while a specialised amphibious version has been developed for the Italian Army and Marines. Through BAE Systems, this has been further developed to meet a US Marine Corps requirement.

CIO (Stand 07-B10) has also achieved considerable success with its Centauro 105mm Mobile Gun Systems (MGS), with a total of 400 delivered to the Italian Army. A further 84 were sold to Spain, which also took delivery of a batch of four armoured recovery vehicles.

In the Middle East, CIO is supplying 141 Centauro 105mm MGSs to Jordan. They are drawn from stock that has become surplus to the requirements of the Italian Army.

Oman has taken delivery of nine Centauro systems armed with a 120mm smooth-bore gun. In the meantime, CIO is developing a new-generation Centauro 2 to replace the current production system.

The first Centauro 2 has recently been completed to undergo extensive user trials.

DSEI 2015: Italian armour builds-up

15th September 2015 - 14:37 by Tim Fish in London

VBM_Freccia_cropped_P4Xhv4x.jpg

Delivery of the first batch of Freccia 8x8 armoured fighting vehicles will be completed by the end of the year, with the exception of 26 vehicles.

So far 160 have been delivered – 126 of which are of the Infantry Fighting Vehicle, 36 anti-tank variants and eight mortar carriers.

According to Iveco-Oto Melara all 160 are operational with the Italian Army’s 82nd Reginment Torino, based in Apulia. The total order for 248 vehicles including: 172 IFVs, 36 anti-tank, 20 C2 and 21 mortar carring vehicles, was placed with CIO – an consortium of Iveco and Oto Melara – in December 2007.

That leaves 88 remaining, however the company also told Shephard that eight of the mortar carrier and 18 C2 variant vehicles will not be delivered this year, so 52 units are expected to handed over by the end of 2015.

A second batch of 381 vehicles was ordered by Italy in 2014. Iveco-Oto Melara said in a statement: ‘Parliament approved the 2nd Brigade but we are still waiting for the complete funding. We expect a first order for 30 IFV, to be delivered within the year end.’

The breakdown of vehicles includes: 163 IFV, 120 explorer (reconnaissance), 40 recovery, 36 anti-tank, 14 mortar carrier and eight C2.

The IFV variant is fitted with a HITFIST Plus turret armed with an Oerlikon 25mm dual-feed KBA cannon and 7.62mm co-axial MG.

The Explorer reconnaissance vehicles, also called VBM (Veicolo Blindato Medio), still have the HITFIST but are equipped with enhanced ISTAR payload. One type is configured to control UAVs and the other UGVs.

Meanwhile, the anti-tank version is equipped with the Rafael Spike long-range ATGM mounted on the side of the turret.

The company added that they are still ‘waiting for funding’ for an order for the SuperAV vehicle that will replace the existing tracked amphibious vehicles in the Italian Army and Navy. A contract for 72 vehicles for the army and 72 vehicles for the navy is expected.

The Iveco–Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) will once again be present at Eurosatory in Paris from 13th to 17th June 2016. The exhibition will give the Consortium the opportunity to display the latest developments in its product range.

CIO will exhibit the Centauro VBM Mortar Carrier that shares the characteristics of mobility and versatility typical of the Centauro family. Its platform is fitted with a 120 mm rifled bore mortar that offers many advantages in terms of firing range, mobility and operational speed thanks to its semi-automatic loading system, electrically powered traverse and elevation and computer assisted ballistic.

The platform is fitted with a rifled semiautomatic 120 mm mortar, capable to use the same ammunitions ordinarily in service in Light Infantry Units to support the fire of the Medium Infantry.

The vehicular mounted version of this mortar offers many advantages in terms of firing range, mobility and operational speed (move, stop and fire) due to its semi-automatic loading system, electrically powered traverse and elevation and computer assisted ballistic. Backup manual operation are possible as well.

Iveco–Oto Melara Consortium introduces latest model of wheeled antitank    vehicle at Eurosatory 2016
Jun 10, 2016449

DSC1984-1.jpg

The Iveco–Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) introduces latest model of   the Centauro Family at the world’s largest international land and airland defence and security exhibition – Eurosatory 2016.

For the first time ever, the Centauro II representing a new stage in the evolution of the Centauro Family, will be displayed. The Centauro has been the first 8×8 wheeled antitank vehicle in the world with a high-pressure gun. Its unequalled performance is the result of a new-generation engine, modernisation of transmission, braking system and control electronics.

The new Centauro armoured vehicle represents a new stage in the evolution of the storied Centauro 105 and 120mm armoured vehicle, the first 8×8 wheeled antitank vehicle in the world with a high-pressure gun.

As regards mobility in particular, the power-to-weight ratio, increased to 24 HP/tonne, provides unequalled performance in terms of speed and acceleration thanks to the new-generation IVECO engine, offering more than 720 HP, and to the associated modernisation of the transmission, braking system and control electronics.

The digital tyre pressure control (CTIS), allied with run-flat systems, the new suspension and the low nominal ground pressure allow the new Centauro armoured vehicle to extricate itself from any type of terrain.

The Centauro II, developed by CIO, the Iveco-Oto Melara Consortium, features a turret equipped with latest generation electro-optics for both the commander and the gunner, a number of communication systems and a sophisticated command-and-control system.

Also among its devices is an H3 Jammer to prevent the remote activation of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

"Particular attention has been paid in the construction of the hull, which is 'V' shaped for increased protection against mines and IEDs, and is equipped with high-efficiency ballistic plates as well as the turret," Leonardo said. "The adoption of a system that allows the vehicle to be driven with just indirect vision provided by externally fitted cameras is a total innovation compared to the past."

Petit point : Les italiens

- utilisent le Centauro-2 comme une aide à leur industrie de défense ;

- ont déjà des VCI avec canon de 30mm au travers des Freccia. Passer au 40mm aurait constitué une perte de puissance de feu ;
