Created this thread in order to synthetize your different questions to Billie. Again, please be concise, coherent and pertinent. I'll try to synthetize my best.

In english?

Let's goooo!

(I'm sure not even half of these questions will be answerable because way too sensitive anyway )

I have several questions related to different topics so I'll split them into different topics. Let's start with EW, datalinks, comms, etc:

  1. From your point of view, is there really a difference between "sensor fusion" as expressed in the case of the F-35 by its manufacturers, and "fusion of data from sensors" in the case of, say, the Rafale?
  2. Since I can't find any definitive answer: is the APG-81 using GaN or GaAs modules? Or both?
  3. Do the F-35 relies on MDPUs in the traditional sense of the term (Cards stacked in LRUs)? Will the databus be modified in the case of the TR3 and block 4 compared to previous blocks?
  4. Is MADL de facto the next NATO standard for LPI datalinks? Will the F-35 host several datalinks in the future and be able to act as a server node?
  5. About LPI and waveforms, will the probability of intercept always stay "low" or can you see a future in which they can be more easily tracked? What countermeasures may be developped to avoid such fate?
  6. DAS and EOTS have the reputation to be so accurate they screw with exercices by identifying correctly training targets as decoys, is that correct?
  7. Is the EOTS better than the Sniper XR in your opinion?
  8. Several times it has been said "the F-35 always operate in flights of 4 aicrafts" does that mean cooperative targetting rely on multistatic modes from the radar?
  9. Does the AN/ASQ-239 relies purely on interferometry to achieve passive emission locations?
  10. Electronic attack modes from the APG-81 able to physically damage ennemy emitters: urban legend or a real operational capability?
  11. Boeing recently (HX Finland) marketted an "ingress-egress" EW capability for their F-18G, denying such capabilty for the F-35. How wrong are they?
  12. What's your opinion about high speed SATCOMs onboard fighters and their interest compared to high speed intra-patrol datalinks?

Following-on with questions regarding the airframe:

  1. Are there huge physical differences between the different LRIPs that may prevent to uplift the older LRIPs to most modern ones?
  2. There are tales of titanium and inconel rivets mixed up on the pulse line on some aircrafts of older LRIPs, was this fixed or is it too minor to act on it?
  3. Should one be worried about the older airframes ending up being considered as differenciated blocks altogether, once full rate production begins?
  4. Having quite a big heavy airframe, the F-35 should prove sturdy, what is your opinion about the abuse the airframe could sustain in normal operations should it need it?
  5. In that regard, was the progressive opening of the flight enveloppe more of a sign of extreme caring or lack of confidence, in your eyes?
  6. About bays! Is having 2 separate bays making things easier to integrate different weapons regarding charge separation dynamics, compared to a unique bay in your opinion (think F-22J-20)? Is it helping with the sturdiness of the airframe to have one center beam from nose to tail separating these two bays?
  7. Do you see the F-35 airframe being compatible with forward-basing operations like the F-35B used to be marketted for, or like Finland may have to in the case of a dispersion of its airforce on smaller terrain?
  8. The nose-pointing and authority of the F-35 is impressive (square loop and hard turns) during airshows, but the shorter length of its solo displays compared to other aircrafts is giving the impression the F-35 can perform these only while being light. Could it still do the same aerobatics at max fuel?
  9. Roll rate is said to be extremely high at 300° per second on the F-35A, do you believe the same rate could have been achieved with another aerodynamic formula among the long list initially proposed before the X-35, or was a rather short wingspan the only option making it possible?
  10. One impressive thing with the F-35 is the surface aspect with all gaps between panels being covered. Is the "scotch" being used to this end solid enough to garantee the pilot's serenity in the all aspect stealth of his F-35 during long missions? Are you confident in the ability of maintainers to streamline these operations well enough to maintain a nominal RCS over the whole fleet in the future?
  11. Was ditching titanium frames in favor of aluminium ones a sound or debattable move in your opinion?
  12. Would having a single vertical tailfin be a hindrance regarding the level of aerodynamic performance needed for the airframe? Stability and agility wise?
  13. Certain commenters have pointed out the apparition of vortices at low speed and high AOA, along the edges of the strakes in front of apexes, or at the edges of the wing tips, meant the airframe was too draggy during manoeuvers, meaning it would bleed energy faster compared to other airframes. How wrong or right are they?
  14. Can you tell us more about the so far inexplicable "pitch to the right" reportedly happening during gunfire with the GAU-25 with the F-35A?
  15. The A airframe is still currently marketted for an over 8000 flight hours lifespan. Do you see this number expanding in the future?

Following on with a few questions regarding the engine and related topics:

  1. Was going for a single big engine a sound move in your opinion? Would have you prefered two smaller engines?
  2. About the debate regarding supercruise or "super dashes": is supercruise possible with the A, B, C versions and the F-135? Does it depends upon the internal loading of the aircraft? Is it really a hindrance to not be able to achieve such a capability? Will the future engine fix this if there is anything to be fixed in your opinion?
  3. Does using the afterburner for too long really was causing problems of overheating around the tail of the aircraft or was this overstated?
  4. Will the air intakes be large enough to accomodate for a higher bypass in the case of the future XA100 and XA101 AETP on the F-35A and C?
  5. The F-135 is considered quite hot with a big plume whenever using the afterburner. Are long range IR detectors and missiles a relevant threat to the F-35 in your opinion due to this? Is it still an issue or a relevant topic whenever not using the afterburner?
  6. Will the "S" exhaust of the future AETP deal with this situation and make the F-35 a truly IR-stealth aircraft? Or will it simply scale down this issue back to a more acceptable level?
  7. Is the intense noise produced by the F-135 an issue in your opinion regarding the acceptability of the aircraft by surrounding civilian populations?

  • How is the F-35 easy to fly ?
    • Does she have special handling capabilities (high maneuvering aptitude), regarding F-16 capabilities ?
    • Is the fly-by-wire control system more protective or more tolerant regarding the flight envelope ?
    • How comfortable is the cockpit and the MMI, regarding legacy teen-fighters desktop ?
  • Does the huge power F135 engine needing some attention or piloting skills ?
    • How are the acceleration feelings at different altitude levels ?
    • Does it break easily the sound barrier ? How fast and how long ?
  • Can you give some rough figure for the F-35 :
    • Playtime and/or ferry range on economic thrust setting, on internal fuel, without refueling ?
    • Typic combat radius on internal fuel, with some aggressive/defensive maneuvers on target ?

Thank you @prof.566 I will post in both English and French. Very good questions so far from everyone which make mine look pretty bland and boring, to be fair a lot of the good ones were already taken:

1. With the active-duty RCAF not really allowed to pass comment from both the Harper and Trudeau Governments, was there pressure being the only Canadian allowed to talk in detail about the F-35 to the public?

2. with the CF-18 replacement announcement was their more excitement or relief?

3. What is your judgement of the Gripen in general and Gripen E in particular?

4. Was the defunct interim fighter purchase of the Super Hornet in 2017 because of the fight with bombardier or more because of the surprise cost of the Super Hornet?

5. What is a legitimate critique of the F-35, vs the least credible critique?

6. Force Structure. The Trudeau government expanded the RCAF which already struggled with pilot and crew retention, the move from 65 Fighters to 88 Fighters for the CF-18 replacement obviously add more pressure for the RCAF along with getting a new type of fighter-- is there a plan or other contingency for how to make the most of the additional aircraft and man them properly?

7. is the F-35, like the F-22 capable of "reading" the enemy radar picture, can the F-35 "see" what the enemy radar is "seeing?"

8. What is the most important new capability the F-35 can add near term? (directed energy, Jamming pod, weapons, engine etc)

9 F-35: Handles more like CF-18? or F-16? or something else entirely?

10. what else can Canada buy now to ensure that the Capability of F-35 is put to best use? AWACS? Tankers? HIMARS? etc

11. The Harper government seemed to have moved to officially buying F-35s in 2015, even going so far as to place a spot in the production line, but I heard the engine fire of an F-35 in Florida stopped this, and put the F-35 back on the shelf for future consideration. is this true? any merit to it?

That is all for now, but I know as soon as I post I'll think of more

I'm curious about this one too, because I know he was the test pilot when this was discovered:

23 hours ago, Patrick said:

Does using the afterburner for too long really was causing problems of overheating around the tail of the aircraft or was this overstated?

Quote

In the opening chapters of his "2034" anticipation novel, Admiral (Ret.) James Stavridis portray an F-35 hijacked and grounded remotely.
With a globally-distributed network as ALIS and a near-peer competitor quite active in the information warfare domain, do you reckon that scenario as plausible ?
I assume that raised some concerns during the program's development?

Claude, from Belgium, happy to see the F-35 coming, soon™.

Merci pour cette belle opportunité prof.566! J'ai adoré le podcast auquel Billie a prticipé.

Excuse moi Stormy, very very vusy en ce moment.
