The sight includes a new generation Catherine-QW multi-quantum well thermal camera, based on technology developed by Thales Optronique and Sofradir. The periscopic sight sub-assembly and the laser rangefinder are manufactured by Thales Optronics in the UK.

VBCI

The 80mph 'Mad Max' monster targeting the Taliban

By CHRISTOPHER LEAKE - More by this author » Last updated at 22:22pm on 23rd June 2007

It looks more like a vehicle from one of Mel Gibson's Mad Max movies.

But this four-ton monster truck is the British Army's new weapon designed to take on insurgents on the front lines of Iraq and Afghanistan.

British-made, the Supacat Weapons Mounted Installation Kit boasts awesome firepower which will be unleashed early next year. British and other Nato troops are being targeted by roadside bombs and daily firefights.

Awesome: The Supacat is described by one officer as 'a serious bit of kit'

Infantry soldiers have complained existing Land Rovers provide insufficient protection from the bombers.

Now, the Ministry of Defence is buying 130 of the light-armoured beasts – which can reach a maximum 80mph – and will take delivery of the first early next year.

They will use a grenade machine gun which fires at up to 340 rounds per minute, usually in bursts of three to five rounds, at targets up to a mile away.

The Supacats will also employ a 7.62mm-calibre General Purpose Machine Gun, which fires 750 rounds per minute with a range of nearly a mile.

The vehicles, made at Honiton in Devon, will also have a mounted 0.5in-calibre heavy machine gun, which fires huge rounds more than a mile at a rate of 485 to 635 a minute. They are powered by a 5.9-litre turbo-diesel engine and will carry three or four crew.

One senior Army officer described the new super-truck as a "serious bit of kit", adding it would be a "huge boost to our long-range patrolling capability".

Senior defence sources say the Supacats will particularly come into their own against the Taliban in Afghanistan's Helmand Province, which has no roads.

Defence Minister Lord Drayson said last night: "These vehicles are well armed, swift and agile and will boost our capability with some serious firepower.

"The MoD and the Treasury have worked hard to get them to our troops in quick time, and they start going out to theatre early next year."

  • Production of ca. 800 vehicles per year
  • Exports to Malaysia, USA, New Zealand, Australia and others
  • 1500 Pinzgauers in UK service and 166 new PPV Vector vehicles ordered by MoD

New patrol vehicles will give troops enhanced capability

25 Jun 07

The MOD will buy new weapons-mounted patrol vehicles under an Urgent Operational Requirement for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan it was announced today, Monday 25 June 2007.

"Like a Land Rover on steroids." The new MWMIK will provide an enhanced capability for British troops on operations

The new MWMIK 4x4 vehicles, described by one serving officer as 'like a Land Rover on steroids', will deliver a new level of power to the WMIK (Weapons Mounted Installation Kit) fleet, with more firepower and a better range and mobility. It will be fast for a four tonne vehicle, with a potential top speed of 80mph (130km/h).

The vehicle can be fitted with a range of firepower including a .50 calibre machine gun or an automatic grenade launcher and a general purpose machine gun, as well as carrying up to four troops with their own individual weapons.

Welcoming the decision to purchase MWMIK, Lord Drayson, Minister of State for Defence Equipment and Support, said:

"These vehicles are well armed, swift, and agile and will boost our capability with some serious firepower. MOD and the Treasury have worked hard to get these powerful vehicles to our troops in quick time, and they will start going out to theatre early next year."

The vehicle can operate across a whole range of terrain, something which will be particularly useful in the desert, especially in Afghanistan where much of the terrain does not have roads.

It is expected that the new vehicles, 130 in total, will begin deploying out to operational theatres early in 2008. The new MWMIK vehicle will include the following features:

          o Longer range

          o Greater payload

          o Greater mobility

          o A top speed of up to 80mph (130km/h)

BAE Systems Wins Further £70 Million FV430 Upgrade Contract

27 Jun 2007 | Ref. 206/2007

Newcastle, United Kingdom. - BAE Systems has been awarded a £70 million contract amendment by the UK Ministry of Defence to upgrade the power train of 400 FV430 series vehicles for the British Army. The original £85m contract, signed in October 2005, included the upgrade of the engine, transmission and other systems to 500 FV430 series vehicles. The upgraded vehicles are designated FV430 Mark 3.

Ian McNeeney, business director support programmes for BAE Systems Land Systems stated: "Schedule adherence has been critical on this programme.  We have achieved all milestones despite the added challenge of concurrently fitting additional armour and weapon stations for operations in Iraq under Urgent Operational Requirements.

"The up-armoured, upgraded vehicles, designated Bulldog by the British Army, have been successfully deployed on the streets in Basra by the 2nd and 4th Rifles and the troops tell us they have every confidence in them. The contract amendment to convert further vehicles is the result of the team delivering a vehicle with a marked improvement in reliability and outstanding performance to the front line on time and to cost.

"The programme is an excellent example of the close and open relationship between the MoD’s Light Armoured Systems Support Integrated Project Team, ABRO, who carry out the conversion work, ourselves and the whole of the supply network."

Conversion of the additional quantity is scheduled to commence in September 2007 and extend the contract completion until March 2011. This will require an initial increase in output from 20 to 30 vehicles per month.

BOXER shortlisted for FRES

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann highly welcomes the decision of the British Ministry of Defence to shortlist the BOXER for the trials of truth of the FRES program and is convinced to fulfil with this extraordinary vehicle the requirements of the British Armed Forces to their full convenience.

In a press release issued on 07 June 2007 the British MoD announced that it "has selected the vehicles that will participate in trials for the utility variant of the Army’s Future Rapid Effects System (FRES) later this summer. The selected designs are BOXER (ARTEC), Piranha (GD UK) and VBCI (Nexter). The outcome of the trials will be announced by the end of November when one or more utility vehicle design will go forward for detailed assessment.

The FRES family of vehicles is vital for the Army of the future. They will high levels of protection and will also be air-transportable, allowing troops to deploy rapidly across the globe at short notice.

Defence Minister Lord Drayson said:

“My highest priority is to ensure that our Forces have the equipment they need to achieve success on operations today, tomorrow and in the future. FRES has a vital part to play in the future of the British Army. I signalled my commitment to the FRES programme last year and this announcement provides tangible evidence of progress. The selection of these designs for inclusion in the utility vehicle trials is a part of the competitive acquisition strategy developed to ensure that we deliver the best solution for the Army.”

General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, said:

“FRES is my highest equipment priority and I am determined that we will make this programme a timely success – it is at the heart of the future Army. I am therefore very encouraged by the significant progress that has been made in identifying the three best candidate vehicles for us to trial this summer and I look forward to maintaining this momentum in the programme to the next decision point by November this year. We need to take this exciting project forward, together with our industrial partners as soon as possible.”

In addition to the utility vehicle design competition, the Ministry of Defence is also running competitions to select a company which will work with the designer to integrate key systems onto the vehicles, and a company that will have strategic oversight of the entire FRES programme and its links to the existing fleet, known as the system of systems integrator. In a clear sign of the MoD’s commitment to drive the FRES programme forward, contracts for this work will be awarded within 12 months.

The FRES programme will equip the Army with a range of new vehicle types over and above the utility variant. This includes reconnaissance, direct fire, and engineer support vehicles. These will also be open to competition from industry."
