Just for my information, is this contract bullet proof or still waiting signatures or things like that ? I've heard some many different versions of this story (like the MoD didn't announce this contract because the contract isn't really signed and so on, even if at the same time English and French newspaper were saying a deal had been done...).

Noone really knows, but I'd put my money on the following: a) A understanding document has been signed. b) Further details and contract signature will occur in March [saudi Defence minister said more details in March] c) The Saudis will get a final assembly line and will therefor order a large number [100+] The above is not necessarily fact but my opinion based on available information.

Selon un "copain" journaliste anglais 8) , un truc a été signé pour 24 Typhoon. Ca, me dit-il, c'est placé. Reste que les Saoudiens réfléchissent encore pour en prendre un total de 48 ou 72. :(

RIYADH : Saudi Arabia said that a deal to purchase Typhoon Eurofighter jets from Britain, believed to be worth billions of dollars, was on course after technical committees signed relevant documents.

"The papers of the Eurofighter jets deal were signed by the (Saudi and British) technical committees on March 28," Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz told reporters.

The documents "are now being studied by the political leadership (as a prelude to) signing them," said Sultan, who is also defence minister of the oil-rich kingdom.

"The deal is on course, and there are no obstacles to it because it is in the kingdom's interest," he added.

Saudi Arabia and Britain have signed a memorandum of understanding under which London will supply Riyadh with the Typhoon Eurofighter, which is largely manufactured by defence and aerospace giant British BAE Systems in partnership with other European countries.

The new planes will replace the Tornado warplanes that London supplied to Riyadh in a multi-billion-dollar deal two decades ago.

The Saudi crown prince did not give details about the new deal, which is reported to be worth up to US$70 billion.

However, Saudi Arabia has played down the value of the contract. A defence ministry official said in December that the reported figure of US$70 billion was "much higher than what was agreed upon." - AFP/de

Bon, et à côté de ça, au mieux de ce qu'on sait (si c'est vrai), l'Arabie en était à négocier le prix et d'autres bricoles du Rafale...

Well that was never acknowledged by Saudi-Arabia nor by Dassault. Whilst these news releases come directly from the heir to the throne. I think France/Dassault has to live with the fact that the Saudis like Rolls-Royces as birthday presents more than Renaults. :P

@glitter: The MoU and the technical papers have been signed. Anything between 24 and 200+ has been rumoured as the number of Typhoons by respectable sources (FI, AW&ST). I personally think a Tornado upgrade for 84 aircraft, 72 Typhoons + 48 options and 40-60 Hawk 128 is likely.

Retorting to flaming thunder? [or better said: continuing with flaming] You must be pissed off by Typhoon clocking up the orders whilst Rafale is well....uhhh......at least they have the 294 French aircraft on order.....oh....wait.....reduction by 8?.......that'd make it 286....ah well not all aircraft can be a sales success I guess.
