"In addition, the infantry fighting vehicle can be airlifted to the deployment site by the military transport plane A400M, thus meeting the requirement of high operational mobility."

The new challenges of the global political situation have considerable impacts on future military conflicts, which in turn significantly influence the equipment of the armed forces. While weapons systems have so far been designed for durability and effectiveness in confrontations with equal opponents, future-oriented weapons systems must meet more extensive military requirements and demand new technical solutions.

The decision in favour of the new armoured infantry fighting vehicle of the German Army has opened up a new chapter in the history of army technology. With the PUMA, the German Army will receive a top product of the German defence industry.

The concept of the AIFV PUMA

The PUMA combines the contrary requirements for high strategic and tactical mobility on the one hand and maximum protection and maximum fire power on the other in an optimum manner in one single high-performance weapon system, capable to react adequate and flexible at any time, at any location and at any level of intensity.

Therefore the PUMA offers with its innovative and forward-looking solutions

-optimum protection against any type of threat for maximum survivability of the crew

-optimum armament for escalation and de-escalation in all missions

-rapid, strategic, global deployability and high tactical mobility

-network centric warfare capability

-sustainability under extreme climatic conditions and inadequate infrastructural conditions.

Available interfaces for:

-Command, Control, Communication and Information Systems

-Identification Friend-Foe

-Future Soldier Programme

-Active Protection Systems

-Remote controlled Grenade Launcher

-Guided missiles

A modular protection concept makes the Puma the world's safest IFV

Advanced overall protection

The PUMA’s outstanding protection is achieved through the interaction of different elements.

The PUMA’s inherent protection affords its crew what is currently the world’s best combined protection against mines, shaped charges and KE ammunition as well as NBC weapons. To support this capability, it features protection technologies of the latest generation.

A low silhouette, smooth surfaces as well as further technical measures reduce the probability of detection.

Excellent optical and optronic vision equipment and sensors of the latest generation, combined with the control and display concept and the communication devices, ensure that the entire crew is integrated in the observation and reconnaissance activities. Threats will be identified early and adequate countermeasures can be initiated immediately.

Redundant functionalities and fall-back modes maintain the best possible operational availability, even in the event of failure of individual components.

Modular protection concept

The PUMA features a new two-level protection concept. The PUMA is air-transportable in protection level A including full mine protection and ballistic protection on a high level.

With add-on armour elements easy to mount, it is possible to upgrade to the significantly more comprehensive protection level C.

The ballistic armour is designed to provide protection against hand-held anti-tank weapons, medium calibre weapons, artillery fragments and bomblets.

The mine protection is highly effective against heavy blast mines and explosiv formed projectile (EFP) mines.

For air transport by the military Airbus A400M, weight reduction is achieved by simply removing the armour modules.

Interfaces for active protection systems are already incorporated in the vehicle. Customized solutions of hardkill and softkill protection systems can be integrated without problems.

The vehicle’s modular concept enables the integration of future protection technologies against future threats.

Survivability

The powerpack compartment is fitted with a fire extinguishing system. The crew compartment is equipped with a fire suppression system.

The PUMA features an NBC combined protection system with the additional integration of an AC sensor.

Components vital for crew survival were subjected to the hardening measures of balanced nuclear protection.

The vehicle signature has been minimized in accordance with the latest design standards.

Effective vision concept

Various optical and optronic devices provide the entire crew with an excellent 360° all-around surveillance, recognition and identification of targets by day and night and all weather conditions. Targets identified through vision blocks can immediately be displayed to the commander for further identification by operating the target allocator.

The primary panoramic sight of the commander is the independently stabilized n x 360° rotatable periscope with an optical daysight channel, which can be displayed on all monitors inside the vehicle by means of a CCD camera. The gunner’s sight with an optronic daysight channel is also independently stabilized. Both sights – with several fields of view – are equipped with identical thermal image sights and laser range finders.

Targets detected and identified by the commander using the periscope can be designated to the gunner for engagement. Immediately after target designation, the commander is ready to observe and identify new targets (hunter-killer function).

The vision concept combined with the innovative control and display concept for displaying of all optronic images on various monitors in the vehicle ensures the best possible situational awareness of the entire crew.

allocation of sights

Commander:

Glass optical sight (primary allocation)

images displayed on monitors: optronic daysight of commander and gunner, thermal image of commander and gunner, rear-mounted cameras

5 vision blocks and open-hatch view

Gunner:

Glass optical sight (secondary allocation)

images displayed on monitors: optronic daysight of commander and gunner, thermal image of commander and gunner, rear-mounted cameras

1 vision block and 1 glass block

Driver:

3 vision blocks, open-hatch view, 1 image intensifier and a display for the reversing camera

Infantry squad:

2 displays for optronic images, 4 rear-mounted camera and 1 reversing camera, 2 vision blocks and 1 vision block rotary-mounted/1 image intensifier, open-hatch view (sliding hatch and partially opened rear ramp)

Mission oriented fire power

Maximum fire power is a prerequisite for successful engagement in high-intensity conflicts and for adequate reactions in other missions with the option of escalation and de-escalation. The PUMA achieves this fire power through the interaction of different innovative elements:

The main armament is the fully stabilized, automatic 30 mm MK30-2 ABM fitted to the remote-controlled turret. This weapon designed for target engagement on great distances also on the move.

200 rounds of two types of ammunition are available ready to use. Further 200 rounds are stowed in the chassis.

In addition to existing 30 mm full-calibre and sub-calibre fin-stabilized ammunition, it is also possible to fire the newly developed air burst ammunition with time fuzes.

A variety of state of the art optical and optronic vision devices enables the whole crew 360° all-around surveillance, recognition and identification of targets on long distances.

The hunter-killer functionality, as available in the Leopard 2 main battle tank, allows the rapid engagement of several targets within a very short time.

Due to the existing interfaces a grenade launcher and guided missile systems can be mounted optionally.

MK30-2/ABM

Calibre: 30 mm

Rate of fire: 200 rounds per minute

Effective range up to 3000 m

Envisioned standard ammunition: APFSDS-T and KETF (ABM)

(other types of ammunition possible)

Alternate firing of different types of ammunition without last shot accomplished by dual ammunition feeding

Muzzle velocity measurement and fuze setting of air burst ammunition (ABM)

Ammunition: 200 rounds ready to fire, additional 200 rounds in storage

MG 4

The coaxial mounted MG 4 is used as a secondary armament laid and operated analogue to the main weapon.

Calibre: 5.56 mm

Rate of fire: appr. 850 rounds per minute

Effective range up to 1000 m

Ammunition: 1000 rounds ready to fire, additional 1000 rounds in storage

Ammunition

The envisioned 30 mm APFSDS-T is a sub-calibre fin-stabilized ammunition with high penetration capability. It is mainly used against vehicles of medium armour protection.

The envisioned 30 mm KETF is a full-calibre multi-purpose ammunition. Depending on the type of target, its time fuze is set for a defined time of flight. Depending on the fuze setting, sub-projectiles will be ejected. Due to the cone of fragments an optimum effect against the specific types of targets will be achieved.

Innovative chassis concept

The chassis incorporates a key PUMA concept approach, the compact, full-length crew compartment for the entire crew, i.e. driver, gunner and commander as well as the infantry squad consisting of six soldiers. This concept minimizes the volume to be protected, thus the crew protection can be maximized within the existing weight constraint.

The contiguous crew compartment is easy to air-condition and offers excellent conditions for optimum, ergonomic crew station design and crew intercommunication.

The entire control and display concept reflects the most advanced technologies. The crew stations for commander and gunner are redundant.

The chassis combines the following innovative elements:

A highly compact, high-performance power pack for a specific power-to-weight ratio of up to 25 kW/t

A decoupled running gear with hydro pneumatic elements ensures high manoeuvrability as well as vibration and noise reduction

A modern and weight-optimized steel track

A confirmer...
