British Army’s New Terrier Is Let Off Its Leash

The British Army has taken delivery of its newest and most advanced engineering vehicle, known as Terrier. The armoured digger gives the Royal Engineers a state of the art capability that can be used to carry out a variety of tasks both in the UK and on future operations.

Despite weighing 30 tonnes, Terrier is an agile and versatile piece of equipment that can reach speeds of almost 50 mph. It is fitted with five onboard cameras and thermal imaging technology, providing soldiers with a 360 degree surveillance capability that can be used day and night.

The technology used in Terrier is so advanced that the vehicle can be operated by remote control enabling soldiers to clear routes from a safe distance. Able to transport up to 5,000kg of material, Terrier has a range of interchangeable equipment such as a forklift and rock hammer that makes it highly adaptable.

The vehicle can also be equipped with a 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun and smoke grenade launchers for use in combat. The Army will receive 60 Terriers, as part of a £360m project with BAE Systems, who have designed and built the vehicle in the UK.

Warrant Officer Steve Cahill, Royal Engineers, who has trialled Terrier, said:

The Terrier is a world-leading engineer support and combat vehicle which can dig holes, lift objects and drill into the ground or shatter concrete. All whilst being controlled remotely and providing armoured protection, top cover and smoke shields for our troops.

Very much in line with the ethos of the Corps of Royal Engineers, Terrier is a versatile vehicle capable of taking on a variety of tasks.

Head of the British Army, General Sir Peter Wall, Chief of the General Staff, said:

The Terrier armoured digger is excellent news for the Army. Its versatility will pay huge dividends on the battlefields of the future. We could not be happier with this new armoured engineer capability.

BAE Systems’ Terrier Combat Engineer Vehicle has been officially accepted into service by the British Army.

Terrier is the most advanced combat engineer vehicle – delivering uncompromising performance from a medium weight chassis. It is also the first UK combat vehicle to enter service designed with an integrated electronic architecture which facilitates ‘drive-by-wire’ and remote control making the vehicle highly capable, survivable and adaptable.

The Swiss Army Knife of Vehicles

Likened to a combat ‘Swiss Army Knife’, Terrier is one of the most versatile, agile and adaptable combat vehicles and can carry out multiple roles in the most demanding battlefield conditions. Typical applications include providing mobility support (obstacle and route clearance), counter-mobility (digging of anti-tank ditches and other obstacles) and survivability (digging of trenches and Armoured Fighting Vehicle slots). With a flying weight of 32 tonnes, which allows it to be transported in the A400M airlifter, Terrier provides strategic air transportability as well as being extremely mobile on the ground on all terrains, reaching speeds of up to 70 kph and with a road range of 600k

Drive-by-wire technology

Terrier is the first combat vehicle with drive-by-wire technology and “special to role” computers which manage the automotive and combat engineer systems respectively allowing electronic signals sent by the vehicle’s computers to perform functions. Physical connections are maintained between the driver and the essential automotive systems for safety and survivability reasons, but the vehicle is capable of being fully controlled via the commander’s joysticks through the drive-by-wire systems and the front loader and the excavator arm hydraulic systems are fully controlled through the databus.

Moreover, the vehicle can be operated by wireless remote control up to 1km away, using a gaming type controller and remote cameras. The remote control interface would be readily recognised by any computer gamer, making this capability easy for new recruits to learn.

Step change in vehicle design

David Bond, Managing Director of Combat Vehicles (UK) said: “Terrier is a superb capability and the latest combat engineer vehicle from BAE Systems, joining the Titan bridge layer and Trojan obstacle breacher already in UK service, demonstrating our unique specialist skills in combat engineering. Terrier represents a step change in vehicle design with its use of the most up to date advances in technology and is the most complex yet easy to use combat vehicle currently in service with the British Army.”

Full support suite

In addition to the Terrier vehicle, BAE Systems has delivered a full suite of integrated logistic support and a complete state of the art training capability including mission and scenario based training using innovative student led exploration to maximise engagement and knowledge retention. Operators and maintainers are trained simultaneously through a combination of high fidelity, full motion simulators, virtual emulations of the vehicle and its systems and hands-on ‘live’ experience. An initial five year programme of Contractor Logistic Support covering fleet management, technical advice, maintenance and logistics support was commenced on 1 April 2013.

Sixty vehicles are being delivered under the programme which are being built in Newcastle. The final vehicle will be delivered to the British Army by January 2014, five months ahead of schedule.

BAE Systems Combat Vehicles UK Terrier Combat Engineer Vehicle is being shown for the first time outside the UK

The BAE Systems Combat Vehicles UK Terrier Combat Engineer Vehicle (CEV) is being shown for the first time outside the UK here on Outdoor Stand G20.

Just before Eurosatory, the Terrier CEV was demonstrated at the French Army Engineer School in Angers, which has a requirement to replace its in-service equipment, for which the Terrier fulfils a high number of anticipated requirements.

The Terrier CEV achieved its final projected in-service date in mid-2013 with 20 production standard vehicles and 12 trained crews ready for deployment by the Royal Engineers. BAE Systems is supplying 60 production Terrier CEVs plus a complete training package and integrated logistics support (ILS).

By early June 2014, 50 Terrier CEVs had been completed, with final deliveries due in August 2014 to the Final Acceptance Build Standard (FABS). These are being built at the BAE Systems facility at Newcastle-upon-Type, which closes this year, but all Terrier CEV jigs and tools have been retained at Telford to meet future production orders.

Terrier CEV is issued to RE Close Support Squadrons and can carry out numerous roles including mobility support (obstacle and route clearance), counter-mobility (digging of antitank ditches and other obstacles) and survivability (digging of trenches and armoured fighting vehicle slots).

It is referred to as a ‘Swiss Army Knife’, due to the extensive range of equipment carried for its engineer mission. This includes a front-mounted bucket, which can be replaced by a Pearson Engineering surface mine plough, and an excavator arm on the right side which can be rapidly fitted with a variety of attachments. It can carry fascines to drop into anti-tank ditches and tow a trailer carrying the Python rocket-propelled mine clearing system. A complete environmental control system, including an air conditioning and NBC system, is also provided.

Nous on garde EBG F2 qui doit rester en service jusqu'en 2030.

 

La valorisation des 54 véhicules comprend cinq volets :

 

-       amélioration de fonctions existantes (alimentation de la mitrailleuse de 7,62, système de tension des chenilles, refroidissement du circuit hydraulique…)

-       meilleure protection (ajout de surblindages, de lanceurs Galix, kit contre les agressions urbaines)

-       ajout de nouvelles fonctions (installation de caméras pour le travail de jour et de nuit, du système de contre minage DEDALE, d’un SITEL, d’un détecteur chimique etc.)

-       aménagements ergonomiques (suppression du poste tireur-opérateur)

-       aménagements intérieurs et extérieurs (stockages, kit convoi exceptionnel, protection de tuyauteries hydrauliques…)

 

Par contre les nouveaux bras de travail qui devaient être installer ne sont toujours pas en place .

C'est quoi la tourelle avec le lance-bombe ??? ?

Apparemment c'est une tourelle monoplace :

"Au sommet de la caisse, une tourelle monoplace est armée d'une mitrailleuse de 7,62 mm dotée de quatre mille cartouches. Des pots fumigènes commandés, électriquement sont disposés de chaque côté de cette tourelle."

Les EBG en photo sur ton message ne sont plus sont plus en service.

Certes, mais cela ne me dit pas plus qu'elle est la tourelle monoplace utilisée sur l'EBG ...

A l'époque c'était la Dragar en production : est ce celle-là ??? ?

BAE Systems is pitching its recently updated Terrier Combat Engineer Vehicle (CEV) to militaries in the Asia-Pacific region, officials from the UK-headquartered group have told IHS Jane's .

Speaking at the Singapore Airshow 2016, which concluded on 21 February, Rory Breen, head of export sales for BAE Systems Land (UK), said the company sees "solid opportunities" for sales of the Terrier in the region. In pursuit of exports, BAE Systems is in talks with several potential customers including Singapore and Australia, he said.

"We see opportunities in Singapore and across the region as well," said Breen. "We have had interest from at least two other countries [in Southeast Asia], and we have responded to an RfI [request for information] in Australia as part of their Land 400 programme requirement for a manoeuvre support vehicle. Singapore is absolutely aware of the vehicle and we have discussed it with them."

Breen said that as part of the Terrier export push in the region, BAE Systems would be willing to collaborate with local companies to adapt the vehicle to local requirements. "Our approach to exports," he said, "is to work with local industry, so I would suggest that countries in this part of the world might want to add certain capabilities such as their own radios to vehicles or undertake minor modifications to the vehicles." Vehicle support would also be sourced locally, he added.

Of the Terrier CEV itself, Breen said that its attractiveness to the region has been enhanced by the expanding range of roles that it can undertake. The vehicle's capabilities, he said, have recently been updated to include a new mine-clearing system as a replacement for the standard front-mounted hydraulic bucket; a long-reach rummage arm, which has been developed to probe and unearth suspected buried devices; and an increase in wading capability from 1.5 m to 2 m.
