ROME - The Italian Army is set to take delivery by December of its first Freccia wheeled armored vehicle configured to fire the Rafael Spike anti-tank missile, the latest step in Italy's increasing adoption of the Israeli weapon.

The single anti-tank version of the Freccia is among the first 54 of the vehicles ordered for the Army from a consortium of domestic firms Iveco and Oto Melara. The rest of the batch of vehicles consists of 50 combat versions, two command-post versions and one mortar carrier.

But a second order of 109 vehicles, which an industrial source said could be signed by year's end, will contain 24 Spike-firing anti-tank versions of the six-wheeled troop-carrying vehicle.

The pending Freccia, or VBM, delivery follows the approval in June by the Italian parliament of the purchase of 990 Spike long-range missiles and 92 launchers for the Italian Army and Navy to replace Missile Infantry Light Anti-tank (MILAN) and Tube-launched Optically tracked Wire-guided (TOW) missiles now in service.

"A previous, limited order of Spike missiles was made for Italy's Col Moschin Special Forces, and thanks to that experience, the missile gained approval," an Italian industrial source said.

Documents supplied to the defense commission of the parliament's lower house break down the new order into 870 missiles for the Army along with 64 tripod-mounted launchers and 20 launchers to be mounted on Italy's Dardo tracked fighting vehicles. The Army also will receive 26 indoor training systems and 37 outdoor training systems.

Despite the plans to equip the Freccia, the documents do not mention the vehicle, while a source at the Iveco-Oto Melara consortium, which also builds the Dardo, said that while the Dardo is cited in the documents, no contract had yet been signed to equip it with the Spike.

The Navy will meanwhile receive six tripod-mounted launchers, two indoor and two outdoor training systems, and 120 of the 13-kilogram missiles. The cost of the entire program is 121 million euros ($176.5 million), with acquisition due to start this year and conclude within six years. Defense spending plans envision an initial outlay of 1.6 million euros in 2009.

Apart from the Dardo and the Freccia, two other vehicles are in line to carry the Spike. Iveco will deliver 30 Light Multirole Vehicles to the Army next year fit for the missile, which would likely be launched from the roof of the vehicle.

A new amphibious wheeled vehicle that the Italian military is considering as a future acquisition also could mount the Spike, defense officials have said.

On the Freccia, two Spike launchers will be mounted, one on either side of the Oto Melara 25mm Hitfist Plus turret. Rafael and Oto Melara, a unit of Italy's Finmeccanica industrial group, have teamed to integrate the turret with Spike, with technicians from both firms attending test-firings at Italy's Capo Teulada range in Sardinia in May.

Thanks to the integration, video imagery transmitted from the missile during flight is monitored on the video screen of the Hitfist turret, while the launchers follow any azimuth movements made by the gun turret, an industrial source said.

At Capo Teulada, two medium-range missiles were test fired in fire-and-forget mode, followed by two long-range missiles in fire-and-observe mode.

"Integration work is now complete," the industrial source said.

Prior to its order for Spike missiles this year, Italy placed an urgent order for MILAN missiles for use in Iraq following its deployment of troops there in 2003, using the missile in the so-called Battle of the Bridge in Nassirya in 2004.

Now, Italy's move to replace its MILAN missiles with the Spike comes as the future of the MBDA-built MILAN is in doubt in France, where the Spike and the U.S.-built Javelin are under consideration for use in Afghanistan by the French military.

MBDA Italia, the Italian arm of the European missile house, did not, however, lose out from Italy's acquisition of the Spike missile. In April 2008, MBDA Italia signed a deal with Rafael to undertake assembly, integration and testing of the Spike, work which will earn it 47 percent of the contract's total value, the parliamentary documents reveal.

  7. L'armée australienne va acheter 35 obusier M-777 A2

The Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner, today announced that the Government has given Second Pass Approval for a A$493 million project to provide the next generation artillery system for the Australian Army.

Senator Faulkner said the first phase of Land 17 (the Artillery Replacement Project) will provide the Army with four batteries of 35 M777A2 155mm Lightweight Towed Howitzers.

“The Lightweight Towed Howitzer is the most advanced towed artillery system available in the world. It is air-portable under CH-47 Chinook helicopters and can provide a weight of fire not previously available to rapidly deployed forces,” Senator Faulkner said.

“The second phase of the artillery enhancement will include the procurement of a self propelled artillery system, which will be capable of providing fire support to highly mobile mechanised forces.

The artillery system will be further enhanced through the future acquisition of a digital terminal control system for the tactical control of artillery, naval and close air support fires by forward observers and joint terminal attack controllers. This element of the project will be considered by Government in the second half of 2010,” said Senator Faulkner.

Dernières infos du salon Dsei 2009

In July, the Main End Items (MEIs) for the Medium Extended Air Defense System (MEADS) passed their critical design review (CDR). With this milestone reached, the design of the hardware components is approved, and they are being built in preparation for a full system-level CDR next August. This final CDR will be the last of 15 scripted reviews undertaken.

Responsible for the tri-national programme is MEADS International, a consortium comprising Lockheed Martin (USA, 58.3%), MBDA/LFK (Germany, 25%) and MBDA Italia (Italy, 16.7%). The contracting office is the NATO MEADS management agency (NAMEADSMA).

MEADS is a lower-tier air defence system that offers full 360° coverage and an open architecture so that it is fully interoperable and able to ‘plug-and-fight’ within other networks. It is air-transportable and mobile – the latter feature allowing it to provide air defence for manoeuvre forces – and it can be up and running in a matter of minutes. It is intended to replace Patriot, Hawk and Nike Hercules.

Germany plans to integrate the surfacelaunched IRIS-T missile into the system as a second layer, and NAMEADSMA has raised a request for proposals to cover this. MEADS International is working with Germany to answer the requirement, and a contract award is expected in the coming months.

IOC for the USA is planned for the end of 2014, and a low-rate initial production decision is expected in 2012, the same year that the first flight test is expected. MEADS International has planned a seven-shot initial campaign, the first six of which will be conducted at White Sands, New Mexico, and the seventh at the Reagan Test Site at Kwajalein Atoll. The tests will begin with a simple flight and work up to target engagement.

  12. A Dsei 2009, Bae a présenté un prototype de ce  que pourrait être le FRES SCOUT

    Image IPB

has been revealed that BAE Systems, Global Combat Systems, has recently completed a demonstrator based on a CV90 chassis as a contender for the Scout variant of the British Army Future Rapid Effect System – Specialist Vehicle (FRES-SV) requirement.

For this application, the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) chassis has been lowered and fitted with a new turret armed with a stabilised CTA International 40mm dual-feed Case Telescoped Armament System (CTAS). Manned firing trials are due to be carried out later this year.

The UK MoD has mandated CTAS for the FRES – Scout requirement and the Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme (WCSP), for which there is also an ongoing competition.

The CV90 FRES Scout demonstrator is fully digitised and leverages off the more than 1,100 CV90 IFVs and variants produced by the company, with sales already made to Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

The CV90 IFV is currently deployed in Afghanistan with Norway and Sweden, and Denmark will deploy the latest CV90 Mk III next year. CV90 has won every international competition it has entered since it went into production in 1992.

FRES SV currently consists of three blocks of Reconnaissance Vehicles plus Medium Armour and Manoeuvre Support, with up to 1,300 vehicles being procured.

Reconnaissance Block 1 consists of Scout, Repair, Recovery and Protected Mobility vehicles, with Scout being the replacement for the currently deployed Scimitar armed with an unstabilised 30mm RARDEN cannon and 7.62mm co-axial machine gun.

It is expected that about 270 FRES Scouts will be procured with a potential initial operational capability of 2015.

BAE Systems is building a preproduction standard turret for the WCSP, which will de-risk the programme before contract award, which is expected in the first quarter of 2010.

Also competing for the FRES-SV contract is General Dynamics UK with the latest version of the ASCOD 2 vehicle.

Présentation au même salon du RG-35

    Image IPB

Based on its considerable experience in the design, development and production of the RG-31, RG-32 and RG-33 protected vehicles, BAE Systems Land Systems OMC has launched its latest RG-35 at DSEi (Stand 465).

Development of the RG-35 began as a private venture early in 2008 in response to emerging requirements for a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) offering not only a high level of protection against a variety of threats, but also a good payload and high level of cross-country mobility.

The first RG-35 shown at DSEi is in a 6x6 configuration, with a typical gross vehicle weight of 33 tonnes and 15m3 under armour. It is powered by a 550hp Cummins diesel coupled to a ZF automatic transmission and has powered steering on the front two wheels.

The RG-35 is described by BAE Systems as a Multipurpose Mine Protected Fighting Vehicle. It is shown fitted with a Land Systems Dynamics Overhead Manual Turret Multi-Weapon armed with a .50 machine gun.

A high level of mine protection to STANAG 4569 Level 4 is achieved by the V-shaped hull design, with armoured glass windows providing all-round situational awareness.

The RG-35 is the first of a complete family of vehicles, with a 4x4 version due to be completed in early 2010. This could be used for a range of specialist roles, such as ambulance, cargo, command, engineer and recovery.
