Meanwhile, if India goes with a ski jump carrier like the Queen Elizabeths, then there is always the possibility of seeking F-35Bs like those used by the British carriers.

India to buy more Sukhoi Su-30MKI and MiG 29 fighter jets from Russia https://www.ibtimes.co.in/india-buy-more-sukhoi-su-30mki-mig-29-fighter-jets-russia-801324 Moscow also says it is processing New Delhi's request for 20 additional advanced MiG-29UPG twin-engine jet fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force is looking to purchase 18 additional Sukhoi-Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft from Russia, the deputy director of Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) has said. According to Vladimir Drozhzhov, Russia has also offered a range of bids for military weapons to India. Defence experts have pointed out that Rafale's extended-range (ER) variant, which offers advanced guidance system and software-defined radar seeker, should replace the ageing Russian Vumpel R-77 (AA-12 "Adder") air-to-air missiles (AAMs) currently carried by the Su-30MKI. The Diplomat reported that the Israeli dual-pulse solid rocket motor has an estimated range of 100 kilometres and can reach top speeds of Mach 4. "We already have the missile as part of the SPYDER (Surface-to-Air Missile) system," Indian Air Force official told NDTV in May, "Integration (with the IAF's Su-30s) is the next step.'' HAL's proposal to manufacture the additional aircraft was also a part of the Ministry of Defence to fit Su-30MKIs with BrahMos missiles. "We are required to modify 40-odd Sukhoi-30s to carry the BrahMos ALCM [air-launched cruise missile]. Instead of upgrading older fighters, with a shorter residual lifespan, it would be better to build three more squadrons of Sukhois with the capability to carry BrahMos missiles," HAL chairman T. Suvarna Raju, told media on May 15. As of December 2018, HAL has manufactured 202 Su-30MKI aircraft in India. The Case of Indian Acquisition of Mig-29s: Why Buy a 40-Year Old Aircraft ? https://sldinfo.com/2019/07/the-case-of-indian-acquisition-of-mig-29s-why-buy-a-40-year-old-aircraft/ REVISITING THE COMBAT CAPABILITIES OF MIG-29 The aircraft has twin RD33 turbofan engines capable of delivering enough thrust to make it a Mach 2+ aircraft at altitude. Its ferry range extends to 2,100 km with a service ceiling of 18,000 meters. The aircraft is optimised both for short range air-to-air-combat, as well as, for Beyond Visual Range (BVR) engagements. For the first role, it has R-60 infrared (IR) homing missile with a range of 8 km, for the latter, it has two Air-to-Air Missiles (AAMs); R-27 Vympl in two range versions of 40 and 80 km and a shorter range R-73 AAM effective up to 30 km. MiG-29 can execute 9g manoeuvres similar to F-16s and all modern fighters. The aircraft is being operated by 30 nations across the world. In 2007, the MiG-29 fleet of the IAF was put through a comprehensive upgrade by Russia at a cost of $865 Million. Besides new avionics kits, the upgrade involves the replacement of its outdated N019 Topaz air-intercept radar with a new Zhuk -AME Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar with a range of 160km. Besides this, the upgraded version (called MiG-29 UPG) has enhanced BVR capabilities, an air-to–air refuelling capability for higher endurance, higher fuel capacity extending the ferry range of the aircraft by 40 per cent from 2,100 to 3,000 km, a new generation weapon control system with a capability to launch Precision Guided Munitions (PGMs), capability to launch subsonic anti-ship missiles, a higher capability RD 33 turbofan engine, improved cockpit ergonomics featuring an enhanced Hands on Throttle and Stick (HOTAS) design. HOTAS refers to a capability in which a pilot can fly the aircraft without having to remove their hands from the controls. Russia has promised to upgrade the above aircraft to UPG standard. Also the price-tag of each upgraded aircraft is reported to be between 285-300 Crore ($40-42 million).
