  1. Light Carrier Studies Already Underway As US Navy Considers Role For CVLs In Future Fleet
    USS-Boxer-and-Charles-de-Gaulle-sail-in-

The US Navy’s engineering community has already started conducting light carrier design and engineering studies, even as the Navy and the joint force still consider whether they’d even want to invest in a CVL to supplement supercarriers to bring more distributed capability to the fleet for less cost.

  2. U.S. Navy Will Not Replace The Patrol Coastals With A New Boat Of Similar Size And Type
    Cyclone-class_patrol_ships_in_the_Persia

At the Surface Navy Association 2021 (SNA 2021) Virtual Symposium, Naval News asked RADM Paul Schlise, USN, Director, Surface Warfare (N96), whether the U.S. Navy intends to replace the aging Patrol Coastal boats. The direct answer is, “No.”

The U.S. Navy does not intend to have a direct replacement for the Cyclone-class Patrol Coastals (PC) under the Trump Administration’s quest for a “500 ship Navy.”  However, with the incoming Biden Administration and shifting priorities and strategies, this decision may change as the U.S. Navy reprioritizes and reassesses amid tightening budgets during a nationwide COVID pandemic, high Unemployment, Stimulus demands, and other federal financial issues.

  3. China Launches 3rd Type 075 LHD For The PLAN
    China-Launches-3rd-Type-075-LHD-For-The-

China's third amphibious assault ship, a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) known as Type 075, was launched in Shanghai today by Hudong Zhonghua shipyard. The vessel is intended for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).

    ...
The Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai already built the first two vessels in the class. The first Type 075 for the PLAN was launched in September 2019 and started sea trials in August 2020 while the second one was launched in April 2020 and started its sea trials in December 2020. This represents an impressive rate of one LHD launched every 6 months.

  4. Metal Shark Developing Long Range USV For The U.S. Marine Corps
    Metal-Shark-Developing-Autonomous-Naval-

Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has been selected to develop and implement the Long Range Unmanned Surface Vessel (LRUSV)

System for the United States Marine Corps.

The LRUSV System will usher in a new era of naval technology while increasing the lethality of U.S. forces, with a network of unmanned vessels traveling autonomously for extended ranges and transporting loitering munitions to address targets at sea and on land.

This tiered, scalable weapons system will provide the ability to accurately track and destroy targets at range throughout the battle space. While fully autonomous, the vessels may be optionally manned and they will carry multiple payloads, which they will be capable of autonomously launching and retrieving.

  5. Update: Statement by Linda Reynolds on 01/25/2021

During a press conference held at Henderson Naval Base on 25 January 2021, Australia’s Defence Minister showed her full support to the Attack-class program:

LINDA REYNOLDS: "Look, I’ve seen those reports, and what I can confirm is that the Future Submarine Program is our nation’s largest and most complex project. We are acquiring the next generation, our future submarines, to replace the Collins class submarine [...] I’m absolutely committed. I work very carefully and closely with my French counterpart, Minister Florence Parly, and we are both committed to making this project work [...] Contrary to rumours, it is not over budget and it is not over time."

Ils vont faire de la guerre des mines avec des OPVs...

Australia’s Future MCM Vessels May Be Based On Arafura-Class OPV Design

The future vessels will come with a toolbox of Robotic and Autonomous Systems to keep sailors out of the mine field, as it has become the norm for modern mine warfare

    ...
For the potential mine counter measure (MCM) variant, the design, based on Luerssen’s OPV 90 could easily serve as unmanned systems mothership: Toolboxes and mission containers can be fitted below the flight deck. The OPV design also features a stern ramp to ease the launch and recovery of a potential USV.

  7. Chinese Ships Seen Mapping Strategic Seabed In Indian Ocean
    Chinese-Survey-Ships-Indian-Ocean-770x41

Chinese government ships have been carrying out a systematic survey in the eastern Indian ocean. Data gathered may be particularly relevant to submarine warfare.

A Chinese Survey ship, the Xiang Yang Hong 03, is currently operating in the Indian Ocean. It has already caused controversy, accused of ‘running dark’, without broadcasting its position in Indonesian territorial waters. The bigger picture is that it is part of a major effort by China to systematically map the seabed across vast swath of the Indian Ocean.

During the Surface Navy Association (SNA) 2021 Virtual Symposium held last week, Lockheed Martin was showcasing a new artist impression showing two LRASM fitted on a F-35 Lightning II.

This image was new to us. Naval News contacted Lockheed Martin to ask about it, wondering if it meant that the company is looking to integrate the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) aboard the next generation fighter. Here is what a Lockheed Martin spokesperson told us:

  10. US Navy Looks To Arm LPD-17 Amphibious Vessels With Long-Range Missiles
    LPD-30-LPD-17-Flight-II-LPD-San-Antonio-

At the Surface Navy Association (SNA 2021) Virtual Symposium on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, Naval News asked Major General Tracy W. King for clarification as to what kind of offensive missiles are envisioned for the LPD-17s, and how will they be implemented.  Major General King replied that he wasn’t concerned so much about the “Material Solutions” (the type of missile(s)) used, and was more concerned about setting the Requirements to offer to the Defense Industry to determine the best Material Solution:

“Do we need Fixed-Box launchers [inside the LPD-17 hulls]?  No.  …the future is `missiles in a box.’“

  13. SPEAR3 Mini-Cruise Missiles To Provide ASUW Capability To British F-35B
    SPEAR3-mini-cruise-missiles-to-provide-A

In the absence of a true anti-ship missile for British F-35Bs, MBDA’s SPEAR will be the only option available for the Royal Navy to fly anti-surface warfare (ASUW) missions from the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. Each F-35Bs can carry up to 8x SPEAR missiles internally (in the weapons bay) meaning they remain low observable. Despite its subsonic speed and relatively small warhead (for anti-ship role) a single F-35 could theoretically launch a saturating attack of 8 missiles against a surface vessel. This is probably enough to disable or put out of combat most vessels, of frigate size and below.

The French Navy (Marine Nationale) Atlantique 2 (ATL2) "Standard 6" maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) reached initial operational capacity on 18 December 2020.

The IOC validation comes at the end of an intense period of operational evaluation conducted by the ATL2 detachment of the CEPA/10S Air Test and Evaluation Squadron of the French Navy. This evaluation revealed a significant capability enhancement, particularly in the field of anti-submarine warfare (ASW).
