En ce qui me concerne, je ne suis pas ultra-fan de ce type de communiqué. "Aurait" ? "pilotes locaux" ? J'aimerais voir en quoi consistaient les tests, et ce qu'ils ont aimé. Là on se croirait dans le plus pur style JL.

David Cameron boosts campaign to sell jet fighter to UAE

 

 

David Cameron has launched an aggressive lobbying campaign to sell Eurofighter Typhoon jet fighters to the UAE raising British hopes that BAE Systems could pinch a $10bn deal from its French rival.

 

The prime minister is due to travel to the Gulf before next week’s Dubai air show amid government optimism that the Typhoon – built by BAE, EADS and Finmeccanica, and financed by the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain – will prevail.

 

“It’s looking good for us. The question is whether it can be signed at Dubai or whether there will need to be a last-minute push there to get us over the line,” said one senior Conservative.

 

Mr Cameron was last in the UAE a year ago, when he secured a commitment from Abu Dhabi to consider buying as many as 60 Typhoons for about $10bn.

 

This was seen as a breakthrough because France had been lobbying for years on behalf of Dassault’s Rafale aircraft. In 2009, French president Nicolas Sarkozy opened a naval air base in the UAE in the hope that it would help secure the fighter jet deal.

But exclusive negotiations between Dassault and Abu Dhabi ran into trouble over Rafale’s price and the strength of its engine, giving Typhoon a chance to compete.

 

“Cameron has worked the phones and pressed the flesh in a way that even his detractors see as going beyond the call of duty,” said Francis Tusa, editor of Defence Analysis, noting that Saudi Arabia and Oman had ordered Typhoons and that Bahrain had expressed interest. BAE executives believe winning the UAE, could help clinch more deals in the region with Qatar and Kuwait.

 

For France and Dassault, a loss in the UAE would be a bitter setback. Rafale relies on France for its survival, but Paris can no longer afford alone to shoulder the €1.5bn-2bn annual cost of keeping up production and has halved its order. Ending Rafale’s production,

however, would maim France’s military aerospace industry and undermine the diplomatic and military influence it gains from being one of the few countries able to rely entirely on its own equipment.

 

Last year, Rafale was thrown a life line by India, which chose it over Typhoon as its preferred option. But that deal has yet to be signed and some BAE executives are confident it will fall apart, giving Eurofighter a chance to step back in.

 

Mr Cameron will visit India before he flies to the Gulf, but has been told not to tout Typhoon lest he insult New Delhi. Having sold its Hawk fighter jet trainer to India, BAE knows that negotiations there can take more than a decade and that New Delhi has a habit of changing its mind. The company’s executives have made clear they would be willing to drop the price of Typhoon, but are quietly waiting on the side lines in case Dassault’s negotiations run into trouble.

 

A Eurofighter order from the UAE would strengthen its position in India, not only because “everybody loves a winner”, as one analyst put it, but also because it would mean enough funding for Typhoon to integrate the next generation of radar that all its potential export customers are demanding.

 

It would also secure thousands of jobs in the UK by extending Eurofighter’s production line from 2017 well into the next decade, securing technical capability the British government sees as critical to national security.

 

It would be a welcome contrast to last week when BAE ended shipbuilding at Portsmouth because of lack of demand for its warships.

Quelle rénovation? Les UAE se plaignent justement d'être les seuls à avoir des -9 dont la mlu n'intéresse pas DAssault.

C'est exactement ce qu'ils avaient dit avec le contrat de modernisation des Mirage 2000 en Inde, alors que Rafale et Typhoon étaient en finale.

C'est rassurant, il n'y a pas que Dassault apparemment qui a du mal avec nos amis des EAU.

Excellent, on a beau jeu après de dire que Dassault est trop optimiste et se prend des bâches.

Quand je pense aux discussions qu'on a eu y a 1-2 mois sur le sujet et le défaitisme de l'époque  de certain, un peu comme sur le topic Brésil en ce moment....

 

Ce qui est triste c'est que cette news ne soit pas mise à côté de celle du Brésil, ne serait-ce que dans la presse française pour équilibrer un peu le Rafale bashing habituel :'(
